The Passive Voice
Have you ever noticed how sometimes we focus more on the action itself rather than who is doing it? That’s where passive voice comes in! It’s useful, simple, and helps us sound more natural when sharing information. Let's explore together how we use passive voice in different tenses—past, present, and future.
Imagine this: You walk into a bakery, and the smell of freshly baked bread fills the air. You see a sign that says: 'Bread is made here every morning.'
The focus is on the action (making bread), not on who makes it. This is how we use present simple passive: object + am/is/are + past participle
Now, think about a famous discovery. When the first telephone was created, we say: 'The first telephone was invented in 1876.'
The action happened in the past, so we use past simple passive: object + was/were + past participle
What about things that will happen? Imagine this: Your favourite book is being turned into a movie. You hear: 'The film will be released next summer!'
This is how we use future simple passive: object + will be + past participle
Using passive voice helps us focus on the action rather than the person doing it. It’s often used in news, science, and formal writing. Plus, it makes English more interesting and easier to understand!

Teen Problems
Imagine you're an advice columnist (aka Agony Aunt / Uncle) working for a magazine. Write a letter of advice to a teen on how to deal with their problem. Use 100-120 words.
You might follow this plan:
P1: express your sympathy (I'm sorry to hear that...), state the reason for writing
P2: write your first piece of advice and support it with possible results
P3: write another piece of advice and add expected results
P4: express hope that things will get better (I hope that...)
The following expressions might help you:
- to give advice: I think you should/shouldn't..., If I were you, I'd..., It would be a good idea if..., The best thing to do is..., One thing you can do is..., Why don't you...?, Have you thought of...?
- to give support/result: This will mean that..., Then,..., This/That way..., If you do this, you will... .
Don't forget to start your letter with 'Dear', and end it with some closing remarks and 'Best wishes'!
My Last Birthday Party
Write about your last birthday party. Remember to use the past form of the verbs!
Organise your writing into 4 paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: When did you celebrate your last birthday?
Paragraph 2: What did you do before the party? Did you write the
invitations? How many friends did you invite? Did you have a birthday
cake? Who made / bought it?
Paragraph 3: What time did your guests come to your party? What presents did
you get? What was your favourite one? What did you and your friends do
at the party? Did you blow out the candles?
Paragraph 4: Did you have a good time?

Past Simple Tense
What did you do yesterday? Did you watch a film, play games, or eat something delicious?
How many books did you read last year?
Where were you half an hour ago?
When we talk about things that happened in the past, we use the past simple tense.
As you remember, most verbs need -ed at the end. But there are some which change their spelling. Can you sort them right?
Then, there are verbs which change completely, and we must learn them by heart! Can you figure out the correct past forms? Enter your name to start the game.
To ask questions or say no in the past simple, we need help - DID and DIDN'T. Then, we use the base form of the verb.
